Talking about Olive Oil Fake is relatively normal, everybody involved in this world knows its scope and, more or less, knows how can be made.
Recently, we inform on this blog about olive oil fake discovered in Brazil, Thainlandia, Canada, EEUU, and I am sure I will write about it in the future.
Fortunately, last fake, as far as I know, are only related to the level of quality that sellers were selling, and not to cases of dangerous or risky stuffs were sold like Olive Oil.
It’s really a shame.
I am ashamed about Olive Oil fake
I am living in a community which depends 90 % of Olive Oil. All my family resources are related to it, all my friends are working in the fields and news like those make people around the world thingking that nobody can assure that what anybody buy is what label says.
The production system a lot of years ago is: Farmers are working together in cooperatives, they work their little pieces of ground, and after the olive harvest, they carry all the olives to the olive mill (propierty of all cooperative members).
This olive mill mills olives and get several quality oils. It maybe bottled there or not.
Usually cooperatives don’t bottle their Olive Oil, but they sell it in bulk way.
As you can see, the two first steps of this process aren’t avalaible for olive oil fake.
But after this first selling, the problem for the users begin.
Tips about Olive Oil Fake
Firstly I need to say that information and consumers knowings about Olive Oil, help to avoid fraud, this is the only way for people involved in Olive Oil world , broadcast all your knowings with your environment.
- Olive Oil quality, commercial categories and time passing.
When an Olive Oil is produced, it’s marked as a commercial categorie depending of measurable values, and depending of quality, by the approval of technicians (see post regulations around the world).
After that, depending of the variety of Olives, the characteristics that made it being considerated as (for example) an Extra Virgin, it’s possible that are out. It’s possible that if your are buying an EVOO certified like that in 2011, today could be considerated as an less category Olive Oil.
AD: CHECK DATE OF BOTTLED OVER THE RECIPIENT. Picual lasts near two years (optimal conditions) and others like arbequina one year max.
The nearer an Olive Oil is bottled from the Olive Orchard, the most security users will get about what they are buying is really what they think are buying. FAIR TRADE, and buying from origin will get you the security of being buying a great Oil, and moreover, what you are paying for.
- Oil mixing between different commercial categories
There are a lot of aromatic, fruity and new wave olive oils which last a short time after being bottled, I am talking about six months, these kind of Olive Oils are mixed with hard Olive Oils in order to mantain their body at least one year. The result is that these oils have an aromatic component that is what you pay for which dissapear and remains the low quality Olive Oil which give the mixture their body.
In this case, the Olive Oil resultant must be identified as the lower quality one, and must be sold as is. This is one of the main Olive Oil fake ways the news are talking about. Main Brands with a high portion of market, selling lower quality Olive Oil as first division EVOO.
Sometimes, we can see Olive Oil sold as a bargain in the first page of supermarket ads. It is important to be cleared that most of the times, these offers are lower prized than origin prize of Lampante or only Virgin, and is presented as Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Consumers must know that production of a quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil needs time, a lot of work, controlled processes and regulations. That list of things make impossible these prize levels and everybody must ask about this kind of irreal bargains. I can`t believe them.

People as Tom Mueller, with his book ExtraVirginity, describes the real world of Olive Oil Fake, it’s easy to know that money is behind this bussines, it moves a very big lot of money, but farmers aren’t really the recipient of it, but very big industrial groups.
